Miishe African Dance explores various West African dances including traditional variations and routines. Classes begin with modern African freestyle street dance to get you moving to reggae and afrobeat rhythms, followed by focused tuition in traditional West African dance movements.

Every week Nii will teach traditional West African dance techniques along with the timing used in traditional dance and drumming. Over the course of four weeks you will learn a series of traditional variations to make up a full routine (several dances will be taught throughout the summer term). Some classes will include live African drumming and you will experience the strong relationship found between traditional West African music and dance.

The classes are high tempo and designed to be fun, so that you can experience the positive energy and joy of African music. No previous experience is required and each week Nii will teach new movements that you can pick up easily.

Nii Kwartey Owoo is a professional Ghanaian choreographer and musician based in Leeds. He is delivering dance and music teaching under the name of miishe, which means ‘happiness’ in the Ga language. Nii’s classes include some cultural and historical background to the dances and their relevance today in West African society.
