Evelyn’s Story | In Mature Company
Mon 13 May 2024Part of: In Mature Company
Evelyn is a resident at Oak Lodge care home and has been taking part in In Mature Company sessions over the last year.
Evelyn used to go to a youth club once a week and she liked rock and roll growing up, she says:
“I don’t dance that anymore but I like it. I like things like ‘See you later alligator’ ”
She also loves music.
“I like love songs. I’m an old romantic. Music helps you to get going.”
She has very much enjoyed Yorkshire Dance’s weekly In Mature Company sessions
“They make me feel important’. ‘I feel ready to go! I like to sing along”
When asked what she enjoyed most she explains:
“Just dancing really. ‘Getting to know more people, their names and just the other people here”
In Mature Company takes dance and music into dementia care homes across Leeds, to improve physical activity levels and reduce loneliness. Weekly sessions take place in 4 care homes each year lead by a team of dance artists and musicians.
Dance artists for 2023 included Kirsty Arnold, Rachel Clarke, Tora Hed, Thom Mckeon, Thilde Andreasen, Alex Garland, Vanessa Grasse and Shauna McSwiney.
Musicians included: Will Turner, Georgie Buchanan and Dave Mitchell
