We are excited to invite you to our next Dance On Master Class!

For the next couple of months we are offering a series of guest led dance classes that will explore new genres, themes and dance styles that we wouldn’t normally work on in our regular Dance On classes. (You might have seen or taken part in our Vogue session with Darren at the end of June!)

Next up, we would like to invite you to join us for an African Dance Master Class led by African Dance and Music Lecturer, Nii Kwartey Owoo. The class will take place on Wednesday 5th August at 2.00pm via Zoom.

African dance and music traditions are almost inseparable. The two are intertwined to create narratives that are rooted in tradition. In traditional forms, movement, music and song help define the context to the dances, ranging from ceremonial, religious, ritual and entertainment. African dance movement is heavily driven by counter rhythm, so you can be sure that this session will be fun, creative and challenging.

No dance experience needed – all abilities welcome.

Here is a little more about Nii and what to expect from the class:

Nii Kwartey Owoo is a UK based Ghanaian musician, choreographer and African dance and music lecturer on the BA (HONS) Diverse Dance Styles at Irie Dance Theatre, accredited by University of Roehampton. Nii was given the title Custodian of Culture by his elders at the age of 12, a role which he carries with him and continues to influence his artistic practice. You can find out more about Nii and his work, here: www.niikwarteyowoo.com

Participants of the session will learn about and explore:

  • African dance technique,
  • Poly rhythmic sensitivity and drum language
  • Counter rhythms in the way the body works
  • Dance history and stories

We hope you will join us for the second Dance On Master Class of the series!

If you would like to take part please RSVP to admin@yorkshiredance.com with the reply: “I would like to take part in the Dance On Master Class on Wednesday 5th August at 2pm.”

We will then add your name and email address to the list and send you the Zoom link ahead of the class.

If you have any questions about joining the Master Class please email Julia on: juliawhite@yorkshiredance.com
