Artivists (activist artists) Rita Marcalo and Zoë Solomons discuss how they work as dance makers in the broad and complex field of climate and ecological activism. From protest as performance, to sustainable home building; this work requires engaging in the present moment challenges of the climate and ecological emergency as a lived experience.

This event is an informal interview between Rita and Zoë and lasts for 35 minutes via Zoom.

Rita Marcalo, Instant Dissidence, is a socially-engaged and ecologically-engaged company in the expanded field of dance and, more broadly, body-based practices. It foregrounds the role that dance/choreography can play as a social engine: we are ‘artivists’ who believe in the power of connecting art and social consciousness. Instant Dissidence also resists the idea of art as an object produced by a special kind of person called the ‘artist’. Instead, its work is co-created in dialogue with (and at times performed by) non-professional artists, and is about issues which matter to them.

Zoë Solomons is a dancer, teacher, osteopath, mother and ecological artivist. She has performed and taught in a wide range of contexts internationally, often questioning the boundaries of, expanding and integrating diverse areas of performance, embodiment, touch and perception. More recently this process has expanded into the arena of Non-Violent Direct Action, in the service of environmental justice and the continuation of life on Earth.
