Access: Our Dance Programmes
About our dance programmes
- We only work with professional artists who are trained in inclusive dance practice. This means that artists tailor dance sessions to the abilities of everyone in the room so everyone can fully participate and enjoy moving together.
- Artists who lead our programmes are trained in Safeguarding and emergency first aid.
- We regularly hold full-staff training sessions around access needs and identity. For example recent training has included Dementia Friends Training, Trans Awareness Training, access training with Unlimited and Anti-Racism Training.
- If you or your child are concerned about attending a new venue we can offer a guided tour of our building on a quieter day before your first dance session.
- Our Saturday Superstars Programme for children was awarded the SCOPE inclusivity award in 2022.
- We create a ‘braver space’, where you feel able to express yourself in a supportive and empowering way. You will be treated with respect by Yorkshire Dance staff and we expect and encourage all our participants to to do the same. Read our Braver Spaces Policy here.
What we won’t do:
- We won’t discriminate against any member of staff or member of the public.
- We won’t share private information (e.g. about access needs) without consent.
- We won’t make assumptions about access requirements.
- We won’t be defensive if you raise an area of concern.
About the venues we work in
- We only work in venues which are accessible for wheelchair users.
- We welcome assistance dogs at all our dance sessions and can provide water if they are thirsty!
- We aim to provide a quiet space within all community venues where we hold sessions.
- For dance sessions in our building we have a wellbeing space in South Space on the second floor. This quiet space is available for any building user.
