Our approach to access

News Image: Boogie Wonderland 2023 © David Lindsay

Yorkshire Dance aims to be an accessible and inclusive place for all. We recognise inclusion as an ongoing process and we are committed to learning and improving to make Yorkshire Dance the best it can be for our staff, our communities, and the artists we work with.

We create a ‘braver space’, where you feel able to express yourself in a supportive and empowering way. You will be welcomed by our staff and treated with respect by Yorkshire Dance staff and we expect and encourage all our building users to to do the same.  Read our Braver Spaces Policy here.

Our approach to improving accessibility and inclusion

  • We have a staff inclusivity group which meets 6 times a year to discuss ways we can improve access and inclusion at Yorkshire Dance.
  • We regularly hold full-staff training sessions around access and inclusion. For example recent full staff training has included Dementia Friends Training, Trans Awareness Training and Anti-Racism Training.
  • We have a staff training budget to support staff to attend additional courses which support inclusivity at Yorkshire Dance (e.g. Autism Awareness Training)
  • We set targets around inclusion which we report on quarterly to the Yorkshire Dance Board of Trustees.
  • We regularly reflect on feedback from artists and participants to inform our learning as a team. We then set actions to improve our services.
  • We make adjustments to support people who use our building, attend our programmes or use our services. For example we adjust the time and nature of meetings, invite people for a pre-visit if they are new to the Yorkshire Dance building.
  • We are committed to providing easy read versions of call-outs for all artist development services.
  • We offer the option for artists to submit video applications.
  • We offer dance programmes to support people who face barriers to accessing dance. Currently these include Leaps and Bounds for adults with a learning disability, In Mature Company programme for care home residents living with dementia and Dance On for older adults across Leeds and Bradford.
  • Our Saturday Superstars Programme for children was awarded the SCOPE inclusivity award in 2022.
