About echome wearable technology

Yorkshire Dance are currently partnering with academics from University of Leeds on the echome project.

echome is a wearable technology allowing dancers to create a variety of sounds through movement. The system was developed by Dr Maria Kapsali, Kingsley Ash and Nikos Stavropoulos from University of Leeds in collaboration with dance artists Sophie Alder and Sandrine Monin as well as industry professionals and a diverse group of movers.

The team are working in partnership with our In Mature Company programme, which delivers creative sessions in dementia care homes, to explore the use of echome technology as a therapeutic tool for care home residents. echome aims to improve cognitive functioning and encourage self-expression through movement.

The researchers are exploring how the echome technology cultivates joy, trust, and confidence in movement and how this encourages deep listening and creative agency within the older adults.
