About Juncture Festivals | 2012-2016
Juncture is a unique project in the UK dance landscape and a magnet for independent dance artists in Leeds, Yorkshire and the north of England. This biennial festival is curated by female artists, who bring a community of artists and artworks together to facilitate provocative and stimulating exchange.
It is the only platform in Leeds and the North for curating and creating innovative, contemporary artist-led practice otherwise unavailable to artists and audiences. This diversifies the cultural ecology of the city and enriches the public understanding of the art-form of dance.
Juncture was conceived by Charlotte Vincent (Vincent Dance Theatre) in collaboration with Yorkshire Dance, and the inaugural programme was curated by Charlotte in March 2012. It featured four weeks of residencies, performances, workshops and critical debates, programmed with an emphasis on female-led work and experimental, cross-disciplinary practice.

Juncture 2016 was curated by artist Gillie Kleiman, who selected works – most made with non-professional performers – to be staged in a range of venues around Leeds from 25 – 30 October.
The artists and companies taking part included Quarantine, Nicola Conibere, Sara Lindström, Lucy Suggate, immigrants and animals and Fitzgerald & Stapleton.
Gillie explained her artistic intent for Juncture 2016:
“The community dance movement, folk dance, YouTube dance classes and Strictly all tell us the same thing: everybody dances. Departing from here, this edition of Juncture collects together artworks where the role of the professional dancer is given to someone else, bringing artists, participants and their shared work into conversation about what happens when the dancing is handed over.”
Many of the performances and events were free of charge, and happened in public places or venues not usually associated with dance.
