“I loved the freedom it gave me” Yorkshire Dance support Unbound Dance Theatre to prepare for Expressions
Wed 14 May 2025
Yorkshire Dance support Unbound Dance Theatre to run dance sessions for blind/visually impaired people to experience and benefit from dance.
Every other Friday morning, participants, carers and guide dogs gather in our building to dance in a workshop facilitated by Unbound Dance Theatre. Designed for blind/visually impaired individuals, the workshop uses accessible sensory based activities and playful tasks to draw out creative movement.
Participants are encouraged to close their eyes and tune into their other senses to connect with the space in other ways. A sighted dancer is present in the session to ensure safety and allow participants to enjoy moving confidently.
This year Unbound’s sessions trialled wearable technology echome, which generates sound from movement. Participants dance together and alone to connect through sound, movement and touch.
Sue has attended the workshop since 2022:
“At first, I was a bit hesitant as I had never done contemporary dance before, I stuck with it, and to my surprise I loved it. I loved the freedom it gave me to move unrestricted in a safe space. It’s also good for improving balance which a lot of us struggle with. I grew more confident out and about, and in myself. I feel fantastic physically and mentally after a Friday dance session.”
Sandrine Monin, founder of Unbound Dance Theatre who leads the workshops:
“Through movement the workshops offer more than just physical activity, they help build confidence, connection and a sense of belonging, both in and out of the studio. We’re proud of the work we’re doing and grateful for Yorkshire Dance’s support, which has been instrumental in allowing us to create a regular inclusive and supportive environment.”
Feedback from Unbound’s workshop participants helped us improve access in our building, for example improving lighting in our lift and drawing blinds during workshops.
The group is currently working on a performance for Expressions in July at Northern Ballet. Expressions is an annual festival of inclusive dance platforming disabled dancers on a professional stage.
