‘It really does exceed a “room” offer’ | Hear from an artist in residence
Thu 17 October 2024Part of: Artist Support

We offer one or two weeks of studio space for dance artists based in Yorkshire who are researching and developing new work. A local artist tells us about their residency experience…
“Whilst undertaking the residency I was helped by Tammy and Ione to do some practical things with setting up the space and also documenting what I was doing, which was so helpful as I was on my own. I really didn’t expect this kind of support.
I was surprised at how much support is on offer, it really does exceed a sort of “room” offer. It’s really so much more if you want to engage with it. From the first morning, I was offered development support by the staff, Joao and Tammy. If I wanted to talk anything through or needed help unravelling my practice. This was such a great open armed experience.
I think a lot of solo independent artists work so often on their own that this kind of experience is vital for them. To be able to engage with the whole culture at Yorkshire Dance and such an incredible enthusiastic and engaged team. It’s great that all the staff are so attuned to what’s happening in the building, and that they are makers or facilitators themselves. It really transformed the journey I was able to take in just five days.”
